چکیده

We reply here to the comment by Maddux (2004, in this issue), which discusses a fractal probability rule (PR) for the spatial distribution of species proposed by Harte and Kinzig (1997) and Harte et al. (1999b) as a means of deriving the characteristics of species distributions that exhibit power law species-area relationships. In his comment, Maddux derives certain properties of spatial distributions that follow this PR, including the dependence of the species richness in a patch on the location of that patch, and argues that these properties are biologically unlikely. He also argues that the PR leads to a power law relationship between species richness and area only for a discrete set of patch sizes and that it does not constrain the speciesarea relationship for areas that fall between these discrete sizes. On the basis of these arguments, Maddux concludes that the PR is not an adequate method for relating the power law species-area relationship (PLSAR) to an underlying fractal or self-similarity condition. We agree with Maddux that the PR leads to distributions with unrealistic properties when it is used to simulate landscapes and that the PR leads to a discrete, rather than

Self-similarity and the species-area relationship.

Self-similar distributions of species across a landscape have been proposed as one potential cause of the well-known species-area relationship. The best known of these proposals is in the form of a probability rule for species occurrence. The application of this rule to the number of species occurring in primary well-shaped rectangles within the landscape gives rise to a discrete power law for ...

The power law scaling, geometric and kinematic characteristic of faults in the Northern part of the Kerman Coal Province (KCP), Iran

According to numerous studies, there are basic and initial scaling relationship for the geometric and kinematic characteristics of faults. The study area is located in the northern part of the Kerman coal province. The statistical calculations are consisting of:  measure the surface density of faults per unite area and division of the area, determining the direction of the dominant faulting and...

Self-similarity and the relationship between abundance and range size.

Patterns in the relationships among the range, abundance, and distribution of species within a biome are of fundamental interest in ecology. A self-similarity condition, imposed at the community level and previously demonstrated to lead to the power-law form of the species-area relationship, is extended to the species level and shown to predict testable power-law relationships between range siz...

Manifestation of the Rule of “Who owns you?” and Position of Ethics in Civil Law

Background: The rule "anyone who has the power over things" is one of the legal rules that the jurists of Islam have been referring to for more than a thousand years and it is very useful in trials and even administrative authorities. It is also one of the most important and practical rules in civil and jurisprudential law because it is closely related to confession, which is one of the main...
